Growing UP

So I thought I’d share the story of my technical background. I was always encouraged to pursue my dreams, as young as I can remember. I couldn’t tell you how old I was at the time, but if I had to guess id say I was 7 or 8 years of age. I remember the day like it was yesterday, my dad took me to Wal Mart, in our little transplant town in Texas. There he bought me my first lego set, and since then I’ve always been the creative type. I would spend hours in my room making things, breaking things, building storylines, sending pictures of what I made, into my lego magazine subscription. After a certain age, I remember my grandpa sitting me down with his MS-DOS 2.1 manual which was, as thick as a dictionary. I remember him saying to me, “If you learn the content in this book you will be successful in life.” Apart of me wishes I would have followed through, with that book, instead, I found my artistic side.
In high school, I was forced to take an after school group activity, as part of my early work program, on top of calculus and physics at a local community college. Out of all my choices, I was excited to start the robotics club. We built so many cool things and tore apart and reused the same pieces because we were a social club. I learned so much, like how computers only speak in bits and how they understand human logic, but I was having to much fun to notice all that I’ve learned.
After high school, I moved to the coast of Galveston, Texas, where I worked on the beach, for a company leveling hotel floors, before they were constructed. Here I learned trigonometry, and projection, and viewpoint observation. In my free time, I bought some books on c and c++. I found it very complicated at the time, and soon put it down.
Next, I moved back closer to home, and got a job land surveying, here I learned topography, and how to make Cad maps. Soon I started using drones with my work, till I was gifted all the pieces to make a nice surveillance drone. Here I learned how to wreck it, fix it, and make it better, in that order. From there I started making drones, linking them together, plotting courses with GPS. On the other side of that rabbit hole, I found microcontrollers like Arduino and Raspberry pi. I would code motor control speeds, lights, light sensors, gyros, you name it, I loved it. It was at this point I knew I wanted to be some sort of engineer and make something people can use or enjoy.
Eventually, I wanted to do to more with my drones, in comes python. I would attempt to learn every now and then, due to long hours of work, but I needed a career change I decided to pursue software engineering. Since then I’ve learned so much, I’m always looking forward to learning more, and seeing where the future takes me.
